About Tamang People

Tamangs comprise approximately 5.7% of the Nepalese population — approximately 1.6 million, concentrated in the central Nepal hills surrounding Kathmandu Valley (Sindhupalchowk, Kavre, Nuwakot, Dhading, Rasuwa, Ramechhap, plus Dolakha, Makwanpur, and other adjacent districts). Tibeto-Burman, predominantly Tibetan Buddhist (Nyingma and Kagyu schools, with substantial Bon-influence in some sub-communities). The Tamang language is part of the Tibetic / Bodish branch of Tibeto-Burman.

Phenotype distribution closely matches Tibeto-Burman / Tibetan source populations — Fitzpatrick III-IV skin tone, uniformly straight black hair, characteristic East Asian / Tibetan features (epicanthic-fold variants nearly universal, moderate nasal bridges, oval face shapes with prominent cheekbones). Build typical of high-altitude adapted populations.
