About Semang People
The Semang are the forest foragers of the northern Malay Peninsula, and for most of recorded history the lowland kingdoms noticed them only when they wanted something out of the interior. They are not one tribe but a cluster of small groups scattered through the hill forests of Perak, Kedah, Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu: Kensiu, Kintaq, Jahai, Lanoh, Menriq and Batek, with the Maniq of southern Thailand as their closest relatives across the border. All told they number a few thousand, the smallest of the three divisions of Malaysia's Orang Asli. Their languages sit in the Northern Aslian branch of Austroasiatic, which makes them distant kin of Khmer and Vietnamese rather than of the Austronesian Malay spoken on every side of them, a linguistic island that most researchers read as an ancient language shift rather than a recent arrival. The ancestry underneath is older still, tens of thousands of years in the peninsula. Colonial writers filed them as Negrito on the strength of short stature, deep brown skin and tightly curled hair, grouping them with the Andamanese and the Philippine Aeta. The shared ancestry is genuine but very old, and the label always said more about the men doing the classifying than about anyone classified. The Malay word Sakai, still heard occasionally, is worse: it carries the memory of raiding parties that took Orang Asli into servitude well into the nineteenth century.
