About Tetum People

Tetum people comprise approximately 35% of the Timor-Leste population per the 2022 Census — the largest ethnic group. Tetum is one of the two official languages of Timor-Leste alongside Portuguese (the colonial heritage language preserved as official language during Indonesian occupation 1975-1999 and the post-2002 independence period as a marker of national identity distinct from Indonesia). Cross-border population shared with the West-Timor / Indonesian Tetun community. Predominantly Catholic — the post-1975 Indonesian occupation period saw substantial Catholic conversion as Catholicism became associated with Timorese national-cultural identity in opposition to the Muslim-majority Indonesian state. The Austronesian / Western Malayo-Polynesian Tetum language has multiple sub-dialects including Tetun Dili (the standardized form used for inter-ethnic communication and administrative use) and Tetun Terik (the more traditional form spoken in some communities).
