About Sebei People
The Sebei live on the northern shoulder of Mount Elgon, where forested volcanic slopes break into an escarpment and fall away toward the dry Karamoja plains. That geography explains most of what follows. They are Southern Nilotic speakers of the Kalenjin cluster, whose center of gravity sits across the border in Kenya, and their language, Kupsabiny, is close enough to Nandi and Kipsigis that speakers can work their way toward each other. Downhill their neighbors are the Bantu-speaking Bagisu, which leaves the Sebei a linguistic island in eastern Uganda: a highland people whose nearest relatives, the Sabaot, are the same people on the Kenyan face of the same mountain, under a different name and a different flag. Sebei is the older English usage. Sabiny is what they call themselves.
They divide into three sections, Mbai, Sapiny and Sor, and below that into patrilineal clans that govern marriage and claims on cattle. Cattle are the old idiom of Sebei life and farming is the newer one. Raiding out of Karamoja pushed families off the plains and up the escarpment across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and herders became growers of maize, bananas and eventually the arabica coffee that comes off the hills around Sipi Falls. Walter Goldschmidt spent years documenting that exact shift, which is why a people of a few hundred thousand are among the better recorded small societies in East Africa.
Ritual life turns on the age-set: initiation moves a whole cohort into adulthood at once and fixes its standing for good. Circumcision was the gate for boys, and for generations it was performed on girls too. Uganda outlawed that in 2010, though the more consequential work had already started from the inside, with the Sabiny Elders Association pressing to keep the seclusion, the instruction and the feasting while dropping the cutting. Most Sebei today are Christian, Anglican and Catholic with a strong Pentecostal presence, and ancestral spirits are still consulted when misfortune needs an explanation the clinic cannot supply. In 1962 they got the thing they had long pushed for politically, a district of their own split off from Bugisu, since divided into Kapchorwa, Kween and Bukwo. Those same hills have lately made the area a byword for something else in Uganda: Stephen Kiprotich won the country an Olympic marathon title, and Joshua Cheptegei, from a village outside Kapchorwa, has held the world records at 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
