About Qeqchi Maya People

The Q'eqchi' (also spelled Kekchi) are a Maya people concentrated in Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz, Izabal, Petén, and parts of Quiché in Guatemala (~1.48 million per the 2018 INE census), plus substantial cross-border communities in southern Belize (Toledo District, ~17,000+). The Q'eqchi' language is part of the Eastern Mayan branch and is the third-most-spoken Mayan language. The community has expanded geographically over the 20th and 21st centuries through migration from the original Verapaz heartland into Petén and across the border into Belize, often associated with cardamom and cattle agriculture.
