About Asian Belizean People

Asian Belizeans comprise approximately 1.1% of the Belize population per the 2010 Statistical Institute census. The East Indian-Belizean community (~0.6%) descends primarily from 19th c. indentured-labor arrivals to the colonial-era British Honduran sugar economy (smaller-scale than the Trinidadian or Guyanese indentured-labor migration but historically present in Toledo and Cayo districts). The Chinese-Belizean community (~0.4%) descends from late-19th c. Cantonese contract-labor arrivals plus subsequent 20th-21st c. immigration; concentrated in Belize City and other urban centers. Smaller Taiwanese-Belizean (descended from 1990s-2000s diplomatic-relations-related Taiwanese investment community), Korean-Belizean, and other Asian populations exist.
