About Asian Costa Rican People

Asian Costa Ricans comprise approximately 0.9% of the population per the 2011 INEC census — predominantly Chinese-Costa Rican (the largest Asian community, descending from late-19th c. Cantonese contract labor brought to construct the Atlantic Railroad alongside the Jamaican workers, plus subsequent 20th c. immigration). Smaller Japanese-Costa Rican, Korean-Costa Rican, Taiwanese-Costa Rican, and South Asian-Costa Rican communities exist. The Chinese-Costa Rican community is concentrated in San José, Limón, Puntarenas, and other major commercial centers. Costa Rican-Taiwanese diplomatic relations (until 2007 when Costa Rica recognized the People's Republic of China) produced substantial Taiwanese-Costa Rican immigration in the 1980s-2000s.
