About Akatek People
The Akatek are named for a place. San Miguel Acatán, a mountain town in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes of northwestern Guatemala, is the center of the people and their language. The neighboring municipality of San Rafael La Independencia is the other half of the heartland. It is a small homeland in Huehuetenango department, close to the Mexican border. Being Akatek there rests on two things above all: roots in those communities, and speaking Akateko.
Akateko is a Mayan language of the Q'anjob'alan branch. Its closest relatives are spoken in the nearby municipalities, with Q'anjob'al and Popti' (Jakaltek) chief among them. It is so close to Q'anjob'al that it was long classed as a dialect of it. Guatemala's Academy of Mayan Languages now recognizes it as a language in its own right.
