About Pwo Karen People
The Pwo Karen, who call themselves Phlong or a name close to it, are one of the two big branches of the Karen people. The other is the Sgaw. Language is what sets them apart first. Pwo and Sgaw are related but mutually unintelligible, so a Pwo speaker and a Sgaw speaker often fall back on Burmese or Thai to talk. On the whole the Pwo have lived lower down than their cousins, along rivers and rice plains, and in long contact with the Mon and the Burmese. That closeness shows in their religion and even in their writing.
Their homeland runs across lower Myanmar, from the Ayeyarwady Delta through Bago, Kayin State and Mon State down into Tanintharyi. It continues over the border into Thailand, where Pwo villages sit in Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi in the west and in the hills of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai and Lamphun in the north. Pwo Karen is not one tongue but a cluster, and speakers from the delta and speakers from the east understand each other only partly. Like the other Karenic languages, it puts the verb before the object, which sets it apart from Burmese and most of its Sino-Tibetan relatives. It is written in more than one script: one alphabet was built by missionaries on Burmese letters, and a Buddhist monastic script comes down from Mon.
Most Pwo are Theravada Buddhists, and the monastery is often the center of village life. Buddhism has never pushed out older duties to the spirits of land, water and ancestors, though. American Baptist missionaries in the nineteenth century won many Karen converts, but far more among the Sgaw than among the Pwo. Small sects with their own teachings also took root, among them the Leke, who keep a script of their own. A widely kept custom is the wrist tying ceremony. Cotton thread is knotted around the wrist to call back the life spirits that Karen belief says can wander off and leave a person sick or unlucky.
Modern history has been hard on the Pwo. The Karen armed struggle against the Burmese state began in 1949 and pulled delta villages into decades of fighting, displacement and suspicion. In 2008 Cyclone Nargis swept through the Ayeyarwady Delta, leaving more than 130,000 people dead or missing and destroying Karen farming communities along with everyone else's. In Thailand, Pwo villages inside the Thung Yai Naresuan wildlife sanctuary have spent years defending their rotational farming and their right to stay on land their families worked before the sanctuary existed.
