About Picentes People
The Picentes were an Iron Age Italic people of Italy's central Adriatic coast, at home in today's Marche and northern Abruzzo from about the ninth century BC until Rome absorbed them between 268 and 89 BC. They did not vanish so much as turn Roman: the towns stayed inhabited, and the Marche keeps their name in Ascoli Piceno and the Piceno district. The Romans said the name came from a bird. A generation of Sabine youths, sent out in a ver sacrum, a sacred spring, to find new land, followed a woodpecker, the bird of Mars, over the Apennines to the sea, and picus became Picentes. The migration may be myth, but the woodpecker stuck as their badge.
Their country was a band of hills between the Apennine ridge and the water, cut by short rivers running east in parallel: the Esino, Potenza, Chienti, Tenna, Tronto. Asculum on the Tronto was the chief town, and the goddess Cupra had a sanctuary on the shore at the place still called Cupra Marittima. Two languages turn up on their stones. South Picene, a Sabellic tongue related to Umbrian and Oscan, survives in some two dozen inscriptions of the sixth to fourth centuries BC, in an alphabet of its own that wrote the letter o as a single dot. Around Pesaro in the north, the Novilara stelae carry a different language that no one has convincingly read, beside a carved sea battle. One ethnonym almost certainly covered more than one population.
What they left is mostly graves, and the graves are rich. Warriors went down with swords, spearheads, and the round bronze disc cuirass that the stone Warrior of Capestrano, found just south of their country, wears under his wide-brimmed helmet. Women's graves hold Baltic amber, traded down the Adriatic and worked into pendants and fibulae, and the tomb of the so-called Queen of Sirolo held two chariots. Rome courted them first, with an alliance in 299 BC, and conquered them second, after a revolt in 269 BC, deporting part of the population to the coast south of Salerno, where they lingered as the Picentini and left their name on the Monti Picentini. Colonies followed, and a land law of 232 BC parceled out Picene fields to Roman settlers. In 91 BC the Picentes of Asculum killed a Roman praetor and every Roman citizen in town, which started the Social War. Pompeius Strabo took Asculum after a long siege in 89 BC. Citizenship followed soon after, and the region became the power base of his son, Pompey the Great, who raised his first army from Picene clients in 83 BC. Under Augustus it was Regio V, Picenum.
