About Moriscos People
The Moriscos were a historical people: the Muslims of Spain and their descendants, baptized under compulsion between 1502 and 1526, watched for a century as suspect Christians, and expelled from the country between 1609 and 1614, mostly to North Africa, where their descendants remain today. What marked them as a group was a double life imposed from above. On paper they were new Christians with Castilian names and parish records. At home, in the Alpujarra valleys south of Granada, the Valencian countryside and the Ebro towns of Aragon, many still washed before prayer, fasted in Ramadan, refused pork and wine and circumcised their sons, all under the eye of the Inquisition. A 1504 ruling from a mufti in Oran told them concealment was permitted under duress, and concealment became the culture.
Language was the fault line. Granadan and Valencian Moriscos kept Andalusi Arabic alongside Castilian or Valencian. Those of Aragon and Castile had mostly lost Arabic and instead wrote Romance in Arabic script, a literature called aljamiado that carried prayers, tales and legal advice in a code their neighbors could not read. In 1567 Philip II banned Arabic outright, along with Moorish dress, the public baths and the wedding music called zambra. Granada answered with the Alpujarras revolt of 1568 to 1571, a savage mountain war that ended with the survivors scattered across Castile. The last generation before the expulsion was mostly farmers and artisans: silk workers in Granada, irrigation farmers on Valencian estates whose lords fought to keep them, muleteers and traders in Aragon and Murcia.
The expulsion moved roughly 300,000 people out of Spain, and the legacy now lives mainly in Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria. Tunisian Moriscos founded towns such as Testour and left surnames, Andalusi classical music and a style of brick and tile building that is still recognizably theirs. At Rabat and Salé in Morocco, exiles from Hornachos in Extremadura built a corsair republic that raided the Spanish coast for decades. Aljamiado manuscripts, pulled from the walls of Aragonese houses centuries later, are the nearest thing to the Moriscos speaking for themselves. In Spain the trace is in place names, irrigation channels and the measurable North African signature that genetic studies find in modern Spaniards. A few families are known to have stayed, hidden or exempted, but as a community the Moriscos ended with the last deportations from Murcia in 1614.
