Sephardi Jews are the descendants of the Jewish communities of medieval Spain and Portugal, and the name has outlived the homeland by more than five centuries. Sepharad is the Hebrew word for Iberia, and for a Sephardi it still carries something specific: a family name like Toledano or Abravanel, a lullaby in a language that sounds like Spanish stopped around 1490. Expelled from Spain in 1492 and forcibly baptized in Portugal in 1497, they scattered along two main routes. One led east into the Ottoman Empire, where Sultan Bayezid II welcomed them and where Salonica became a majority-Jewish port whose docks went quiet on Saturday. The other led to Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, where the newcomers, called megorashim, the expelled, settled alongside older local Jewish populations. A third, smaller stream formed later, when converso families who had lived outwardly as Catholics for generations returned to open Judaism in Amsterdam, London, Livorno, and the Atlantic colonies. These Western Sephardim, the Spanish and Portuguese Jews, founded the first synagogues in New York, Newport, and Curaçao.

Language is the clearest marker. Judeo-Spanish, called Ladino or Judezmo in the east and Haketia in northern Morocco, kept fifteenth-century Castilian grammar and absorbed Hebrew, Turkish, Greek, and Arabic words, written for most of its history in Hebrew letters. It was the street language of Istanbul, Izmir, Sarajevo, and Sofia into the twentieth century. The Holocaust destroyed its heartland: Salonica's community was deported almost in its entirety, and Ladino now survives mainly among the elderly, in song, and in revival classes. Religiously, Sephardim keep their own liturgical rite and their own pronunciation of Hebrew, which became the basis for modern Israeli speech. Their legal code is the Shulchan Aruch of Joseph Karo, born in Toledo, read without the Ashkenazi glosses. The differences show up at the table and in the calendar: rice and legumes are eaten during Passover, penitential prayers begin a full month before Rosh Hashanah, and the New Year opens with a sequence of symbolic foods, leeks, dates, pumpkin, each with its own blessing. Children are commonly named for living grandparents, which Ashkenazim avoid. Moroccan families hold henna nights before weddings, and the bride may wear the keswa el kbira, a velvet dress stiff with gold embroidery whose cut is said to descend from Spanish court fashion. Most Sephardim now live in Israel, where the term has stretched to cover nearly all non-Ashkenazi Jews under a single Sephardi Chief Rabbi, with large communities in France, Turkey, the United States, and Latin America. In 2015 Spain and Portugal offered citizenship to proven descendants, and well over a hundred thousand people applied, many from families that had gone on calling their language Espanyol for five hundred years.
