Genealogists count them among the Karlani, the hill Pashtuns who also include the Afridi, Khattak and Wazir. Their language is Pashto, the Eastern Iranian tongue that stays the language of home, market and jirga even where Urdu and English run the schools and offices.
The tribe divides into major branches, among them the Daulatzai, Ismailzai and Lashkarzai. Pakistan made the area Orakzai Agency in 1973, the only tribal agency with no border on Afghanistan. Distance from the border did not spare it: in the late 2000s the Pakistani Taliban used it as a base, and military operations displaced much of the population for years. Since 2018 it has been an ordinary district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Pashtunwali, the code of hospitality, honor and refuge, still shapes how disputes are settled and how guests are received.
