About Lodha People
The Lodha are a forest people of the old Jangalmahal, the belt of sal woodland and red laterite scrub where southwestern West Bengal meets northern Odisha. Outsiders have mostly known them by a label, not by any costume or festival. Under British rule the Lodha were declared a criminal tribe, and the stigma outlived the law by generations. The colonial act was repealed after independence and the Lodha were denotified. Even so, police, landlords and neighbors went on treating them as suspects by birth. Today both West Bengal and Odisha list them as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group, the Indian government's term for communities living in the deepest poverty.
Many Lodha call themselves Lodha Sabar and trace their ancestry to the Sabar (Savara) hunters of Sanskrit epics and of the Jagannath origin legends of Odisha. The name itself is often traced to a Sanskrit word for hunter or trapper. That fits their older way of life: gathering sal and kendu leaves, honey, tubers and firewood, trapping small game, and digging monitor lizards and snakes out of their burrows, a skill neighbors still associate with them. As forests were cut down or closed off, most families turned to seasonal farm labor and stitching sal leaf plates, usually without land of their own.
