About Moro Bangsamoro People
Moro / Bangsamoro Filipinos comprise approximately 6.9% of the Philippine population — the umbrella for the various Muslim Filipino ethnic groups, concentrated in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM, established 2019 following the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front) plus surrounding Mindanao provinces. The umbrella includes Maranao (~1.5M+, predominantly in Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte, distinguished by the Maranao language and the Maranao Sultanate cultural heritage), Maguindanao (~1.4M+, Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur provinces), Tausug (~1M+, Sulu Archipelago, distinguished by the Sulu Sultanate cultural heritage), Yakan (Basilan), Sama-Bajau Muslims (the Muslim sub-population of the broader Sama-Bajau sea-people community), Sangil (Sarangani), Kalagan (Davao), Iranun, Palawani, Molbog, Jama Mapun, plus other Moro sub-groups. The Moro identity emerged from approximately 13th-c.-CE Indonesian-Arab Sunni Islamic introduction to the Sulu Archipelago and Mindanao plus subsequent religious-cultural consolidation. The community resisted Spanish colonial conquest (the so-called Moro Wars of 1565-1898) and has maintained substantial cultural-religious distinctness from the predominantly Catholic Filipino majority. Long-running armed conflict between Moro Islamic separatist movements (the Moro National Liberation Front 1969-1996, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front 1981-2014, plus splinter groups) and the Philippine government produced the post-2014 political settlement establishing BARMM autonomy.
