About Medjay People
The Medjay were a desert people of Lower Nubia who enter Egyptian records around the twenty-fourth century BC and drop out of them near the end of the second millennium, absorbed into Egypt or dispersed back into the hills. The Beja of the Red Sea coast are the usual candidates for their descendants, though that line is argued rather than settled. Their homeland, which Egyptian scribes called Medja, lay in the dry country between the Nile and the Red Sea: land for herders and hunters rather than farmers, and close enough to the river to matter to whoever held it.
The strange thing about the Medjay is that the name outlived the people and became a job. It starts as an ethnonym, a southern nation the Egyptian state wanted catalogued. Middle Kingdom dispatches from the fortresses at Semna log Medjay coming down to the water to trade and being sent back, the traffic recorded like customs paperwork. By the wars that ended the Hyksos occupation they were fighting for Egypt as troops. By the New Kingdom the word had become a title for a state force of desert rangers and necropolis guards, and a man called a Medjay might have no Nubian ancestry at all. The Deir el-Medina archive catches them in ordinary working time: patrolling the tomb builders' village, carrying messages, standing watch, and giving evidence in the tomb robbery investigations of the twentieth dynasty.
