About Lengue People
The Lengue, also written Balengue, are one of the small coastal peoples of mainland Equatorial Guinea, and what sets them apart is their speech. They live on the Atlantic shore of Río Muni south of Bata, in Litoral province, along the stretch running toward the Gabon border. Their neighbors on that coast, the Kombe, Benga and Bapuku, speak closely related languages and are grouped together as the Ndowe. They are few. In the nineteenth century the positions were reversed: the peoples of the shore were the brokers between European trading ships and the forest interior, until Fang expansion toward the sea and then Spanish colonial administration took that role out from under them. The Macías Nguema dictatorship of 1968 to 1979 killed or exiled a large share of the country's people, and the coastal villages were not spared.
Daily life runs on fishing, small plots of cassava and plantain, and, increasingly, wage work in nearby Bata, which sits close enough to pull young people out of the villages. Most Lengue are Christian, chiefly Roman Catholic as a legacy of Spanish rule, with Presbyterian congregations along the coast that date from American mission work in the nineteenth century. Older beliefs about ancestors and healing have not gone away. They sit alongside church practice rather than against it.
Very little has been written about the Lengue on their own terms. They tend to appear as a single line in lists of Equatorial Guinea's minorities, and their language is among the least documented on that coast.
