It does not belong with the Northern Aslian languages of the Jahai, Kensiu and Kintaq, the Semang peoples they otherwise most resemble. The likely reason is long contact with Temiar neighbors in the same hill country. The Lanoh were never one unified group. Their dialects, Jengjeng and Yir, along with the closely related Semnam and the now extinct Sabüm, go back to a scatter of small bands. The twentieth century moved the Lanoh into fixed villages. During the Malayan Emergency of 1948 to 1960, the colonial government and communist guerrillas fought for the loyalty of the people living in the interior. Across the peninsula, Orang Asli communities were regrouped and put under state administration. Later, logging and plantation farming ate into the forest the Lanoh depended on. Today most live in planned settlements. They combine wage work and the collection of rattan and other forest products with what foraging is still possible. In traditional belief the forest is full of spirits tied to animals, plants and weather, and shamans deal with them on the community's behalf. That outlook survives alongside Islam, which some Lanoh have adopted with steady encouragement from state outreach programs. The language is endangered, and younger people are shifting toward Malay. The Lanoh's home district also contains the Lenggong Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its caves and open-air sites hold some of the oldest evidence of human life on the peninsula, including the skeleton known as Perak Man, roughly 10,000 years old. The Lanoh are not a relic of that past, but few living communities go about their days in a landscape with a longer human history.
