About Koya People
The Koya are the people of the Godavari forests. Their villages follow the river and its tributaries through the wooded hills where Telangana and Andhra Pradesh meet southern Chhattisgarh and the Malkangiri district of Odisha. Koya is the name on government paper, which lists them as a Scheduled Tribe. In their own speech many say Koitur, the same word the Gond use for themselves. That is no accident: the two peoples speak closely related languages.
Their language, also called Koya, belongs to the Dravidian family and sits close to Gondi. Telugu, the main language all around it, is a more distant relative in the same family. Most Koya speak both, and in many villages nearer the towns Telugu has already replaced Koya as the language spoken at home.
Koya religion is local first. Worship centers on mother goddesses, the earth, the hills and the ancestors. Hindu gods have been taken in alongside them, and there is a Christian minority. The biggest public expression is the Sammakka Saralamma Jatara at Medaram, in Telangana's Mulugu district, held every two years. It honors a Koya mother and daughter who, in the story, died fighting the Kakatiya rulers of Warangal over tribute demanded during a drought. Much of daily life still follows the forest calendar: fields of rice and millet, cattle, and seasonal gathering of tendu leaves and mahua flowers, whose liquor is used in ritual.
