About Kotas People
The Kotas are one of a handful of communities native to the Nilgiri plateau in northwestern Tamil Nadu, and for most of recorded memory they were the ones who made things. In an upland economy where the Todas kept buffalo and the Badagas grew grain, the Kotas smithed the iron, threw the pots, cut the wood, worked the silver and, crucially, played the music. Kota bands were required at Toda and Badaga funerals and festivals: other people's most important days did not properly begin until Kota musicians arrived. Outsiders described that arrangement as a caste hierarchy with the Kotas near the bottom, which is one reading, and as an exchange among small hill peoples who each held a piece of the whole, which is another. The Kotas have spent the last century arguing with the first.
They live in seven villages scattered around Kotagiri, Udhagamandalam and Gudalur; the town of Kotagiri carries their name. Each village is divided into three wards, and the wards regulate who may marry whom. The language is Dravidian but sits at an odd angle to its relatives: along with Toda it broke early from the southern branch that produced Tamil and Kannada, and centuries in the hills pushed it further off. It has no script and perhaps a couple of thousand speakers. Nearly every Kota also speaks Tamil, Badaga or Kannada, so Kota is the language of home and of other Kotas, and something else is the language of everywhere else.
Religion is village religion. The gods are a father and a mother, and their shrines are ritually rebuilt rather than maintained. The year turns on the god ceremony in the cold months, when the temple is remade, fire is kindled by friction, and the double reed kol is played to tunes that belong to the deities and are used for nothing else. Priests are identified by divination rather than inheritance, so a village can find itself waiting for one. Funerals once came in two stages, a cremation soon after death and a much larger collective ceremony later for everyone who had died since the last one; the second was curtailed or dropped in most villages during a reform current in the 1930s, when literate Kotas pushed to abandon practices their neighbors used against them. British settlement of the Nilgiris after 1818 had already rearranged the rest: roads, tea and coffee, and a market with no need for a hereditary smith. What has kept the Kotas coherent is not isolation, which they never had, but a ritual year that requires all seven villages to still be there.
