About Komo People
The Komo are a Bantu-speaking forest people of northeastern Congo. Outsiders know them by several names, Kumu, Bakumu or Wakumu, depending on which language supplies the prefix. They have no connection to the Komo who live on the border of South Sudan and Ethiopia. Two things hold them together: their language, Kikomo, and their homeland in the thick rainforest east of the upper Congo River. That forest runs from the edges of Kisangani toward Lubutu and Walikale, across Tshopo, Maniema and North Kivu provinces. Families grow cassava, plantains and rice on plots cleared from the forest. Hunting, trapping and fishing bring in both food and cash. Many villages sit along the long road from Kisangani to the Kivu region, and most goods, news and trouble reach them by that road.
Linguists group Kikomo with the forest Bantu languages Bali, Amba and Lega, but few Komo get through a week speaking only Kikomo. Today most Komo are Christian, Catholic or Protestant, a legacy of missions active through the colonial period. Older beliefs are still around. When illness or bad luck needs explaining, people still go to healers and diviners. Komo carvers have made masks and figures tied to that work, and some of these now sit in museum collections far from the forest. Since the 1990s the wars of eastern Congo have reached Komo country directly. Armed groups, mining camps and waves of displacement have changed villages whose people lived off the forest for generations. The Komo are still mostly rural, but many also live in Kisangani and smaller towns and move back and forth between the city and their home villages.
