Kachok Erotic

The Kachok (also written Kachac, Kaco', or Kachak) are a small Austroasiatic-speaking people of the northeastern Cambodian highlands. They are counted among the indigenous minorities that Khmer speakers collectively call Khmer Loeu, meaning "upland Khmer." Their homeland lies mainly in Andoung Meas and adjoining districts of Ratanakiri Province, in the forested country drained by tributaries of the Sesan River. Population estimates are modest, placing the Kachok at roughly 3,000 to 5,000 people, which makes them one of the smaller recognised ethnic groups of the province.

Language and neighbours

The Kachok language belongs to the Bahnaric branch of the Austroasiatic (Mon-Khmer) family. This places it alongside the tongues of surrounding highland peoples such as the Tampuan and Brao, with whom the Kachok share long histories of intermarriage, trade, and exchange. Historically the language has been spoken rather than written, carried in everyday speech, ritual formulas, and oral tradition rather than in books, and many Kachok today are also bilingual in Khmer.

Society and subsistence

Traditional Kachok livelihood rests on swidden cultivation, a rotational system in which forest plots are cleared, burned, planted, and then rested for years to recover their fertility. Dry (upland) rice is the staple, grown together with maize, cassava, tubers, and gourds, while hunting, fishing, and the gathering of forest products such as resin, bamboo, rattan, wild fruit, and honey round out the diet and provide goods for barter. Villages are built around extended families and are guided less by formal chiefs than by respected elders who mediate disputes and oversee communal decisions. Land has generally been held and worked collectively rather than owned as individual property, an arrangement now under pressure from commercial plantations and in-migration.

Belief and appearance

Kachok religion is animist: the forests, streams, fields, and particular sites are understood to be inhabited by spirits whose goodwill is sought through offerings and animal sacrifice, especially at planting, harvest, illness, and death. Ritual specialists communicate with these spirits and diagnose the causes of misfortune. In appearance the Kachok share the brown-skinned, dark-eyed features common to the Mon-Khmer highlanders of the region. Everyday dress was traditionally simple and made from handwoven cotton, and ornament such as beads, earplugs, and metal bracelets marked festive and ceremonial occasions rather than daily wear.
