The Jakun call themselves Orang Hulu, the people upstream, and the preference is not incidental. "Jakun" is a name others gave them, and in colloquial Malay it drifted into an insult meaning someone easily impressed, a bumpkin gawking at city lights. The people it names live along the rivers of southern Pahang and northern Johor, in the Endau and Rompin catchments and the lake country around Tasik Chini, in what is left of the lowland forest on the Malay Peninsula. They are the largest of the groups Malaysian officialdom files under Proto-Malay, one of three administrative baskets for the Orang Asli, and that label is a colonial-era leftover: a nineteenth century theory of migration waves that geneticists stopped believing decades ago but that still determines which office handles your paperwork.

Their language is Malayic, the same Austronesian branch that produced standard Malay, and it sits close enough that outsiders hear a country dialect rather than a separate tongue. Speakers know better. Daily life runs on Malay now, and Jakun proper is thinning among the young. Religion has moved on a similar track. The older frame is animist: a world of forest spirits, ritual specialists who handle illness and dreams, and taboos governing what you say and what you take when you are under the canopy. Since the 1980s the state has run organized missionary work through the department that administers Orang Asli affairs, and conversion to Islam has arrived with houses, roads and allowances attached. Plenty of families carry both frames at once without much visible strain.

Work is part forest, part farm. The Jakun sat at the top of a trade chain that ran downriver to middlemen and out to the world: rattan, damar resin, wild honey, and above all gaharu, the fungus-infected heartwood of the Aquilaria tree, which sells by the gram in Gulf and East Asian perfume markets and returns almost none of that to the person who found it. Swidden rice gave way to rubber, rubber to oil palm, often on someone else's estate. Land is the live issue. Emergency-era resettlement moved communities off their rivers, and logging concessions took much of the rest. Since a landmark ruling in 2002, Orang Asli communities including Jakun ones in Pahang have gone to court over customary title and have sometimes won, which in Malaysia is a genuinely new thing.
