About Jahai People
The Jahai are foragers of the mountain rainforest along the Perak and Kelantan border in northern Peninsular Malaysia, with a small number over the frontier in southern Thailand. There are only a few thousand of them. They belong to the Semang, the short, dark-skinned, tightly-curled-haired Orang Asli whose ancestry on the peninsula runs deeper than anyone else's. For most of their recorded history they lived in bands of a few families, shifting between camps of palm-thatch lean-tos, hunting arboreal game with bamboo blowpipes and darts tipped with ipoh latex, digging wild yams, and trading rattan and aromatic agarwood to dealers downriver.
Their language, Jahai, is Northern Aslian, a branch of Austroasiatic, which makes it a distant relative of Khmer and Vietnamese rather than of Malay.
