About Batek People

They move those camps when the food nearby runs low, when someone dies, or when people want to be closer to relatives somewhere else. For a long time they have made their living by hunting with blowpipes, digging wild yams, fishing, and collecting rattan, agarwood and honey to trade with Malay villagers downriver. They are part of the Semang, the smallest of the three broad Orang Asli divisions, along with the Jahai, Mendriq and Kensiu. Their language belongs to the Aslian branch of Austroasiatic. That links them distantly to Khmer and Vietnamese, not to the Malay spoken all around them. It divides into dialect groups such as Batek Deq, Batek Teq and Batek Nong, and most adults also speak Malay. Nobody in a camp has the power to give orders, food is shared between households, and women and men have closely matched standing. Anthropologists who worked among them in the 1970s met a community whose recognized headman was a woman.
Religion is part of everyday conduct, not something kept apart from it. The Batek recognize superhuman beings called hala', who live above the sky and bring the forest's fruit seasons. They also recognize a thunder being who sends violent storms when people commit certain offenses, the best known being laughing at animals. When a storm turns threatening, a person may cut their shin and throw a little blood mixed with water toward the sky as an offering. Singing sessions keep relations with the hala' in good order. Some Batek have converted to Islam, often through government programs, while many still follow the older practices. The twentieth century shrank their forest. Taman Negara, created in the late 1930s, protected a large part of it, and much of Batek life now centers on the park. Outside it, logging, oil palm plantations and resettlement schemes have taken over much of the land. Many families now divide their time between forest camps and government villages, and some earn cash guiding park visitors or demonstrating the blowpipe. In 2019 a measles outbreak at the Kuala Koh settlement in Kelantan killed more than a dozen Batek, a hard reminder of how poor their access to health care still is.
