About Itsekiri People
The Itsekiri call themselves Iwere, and they live where the rivers stop being fresh. Their homeland is the western corner of the Niger Delta, roughly 1,500 square miles of mangrove, creek and sandbar around the Benin, Escravos and Forcados rivers in present-day Delta State, Nigeria. Much of it is water, and for centuries that was the advantage rather than the problem. Itsekiri towns sat at the point where ocean-going ships could go no further upriver and inland producers had to come down, and whoever held that hinge held the trade: first in captives, later in palm oil. Their language marks them out from everyone around them. Itsekiri is Yoruboid, a relative of Yoruba and Igala, spoken by a people otherwise ringed by Edo, Urhobo, Isoko and Ijaw speakers. Its vocabulary carries the record of contact, with court terms out of Benin, whose prince Ginuwa is remembered as the founder of the kingdom near the end of the fifteenth century, and Portuguese loanwords from the traders who followed. Escravos and Forcados are Portuguese names still sitting on a Nigerian map.
The Portuguese connection went further here than along most of the coast. The royal house accepted baptism in the late sixteenth century and sent a prince to be educated in Portugal, and Christian names run through the king list for generations afterward, which makes the Olu of Warri one of the older Christian dynasties in West Africa. The throne also has a strange hole in it. After Olu Akengbuwa died in 1848 no successor was installed for close to ninety years, and in that vacuum the merchant chiefs ran the rivers, above all Nana Olomu, Governor of the Benin River, whose fortified base at Ebrohimi the British destroyed in 1894. The kingship was restored in 1936 and sits at the center of Itsekiri public life, its old offices of Ologbotsere and Iyatsere still filled and still argued over. Most Itsekiri are Christian, though the sea deity Umalokun and the family shrines have not vanished from the creeks. They are a small people, a few hundred thousand, living in an oil region they share uneasily with Urhobo and Ijaw neighbors. The Warri conflicts of the late 1990s turned on ward boundaries and the siting of a local government headquarters, and the questions underneath them are not settled.
