About Holoholo People
The Holoholo are a lake people. Their home is the western shore of Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, around Kalemie, where the Lukuga River carries the lake's water west toward the Congo basin. A smaller community lives across the water in Tanzania. For the Holoholo, the lake is not scenery. It is their road, their pantry and their border all at once, and life on the shore still follows it: boats heading out after dark with lamps burning, and small silver fish drying in the sun before they are sold inland.
They speak Holoholo, a Bantu language of the southeastern Congo. Nearly everyone also speaks Swahili, the working language of the lake's markets and ports, and that Swahili layer is old. In the nineteenth century, caravans from the East African coast reached Ujiji on the far shore, and canoes carried ivory, captives and trade goods back and forth. The traders brought guns, cloth, coastal fashions and Islam. They also brought violence. The slave trade emptied lakeshore villages and weakened the chiefs who had held local power.
Europeans arrived in the middle of that upheaval. In 1891 a Belgian antislavery expedition set up a post at the mouth of the Lukuga. That post became Albertville and later Kalemie, and Catholic missions spread along the shore. A Belgian colonial monograph published in 1912 recorded the people as the Baholoholo, and it was one of the early ethnographic studies of the region. Today most Holoholo are Christian. Muslims live in the lakeshore towns, and older beliefs about ancestors and spirits still exist alongside church and mosque.
Holoholo carvers have work in museum collections.
