About Gododdin People
The Gododdin were a Brittonic people of the post-Roman north who held the country roughly between the Firth of Forth and the River Tyne from about the fifth century until the Angles of Bernicia overran them in the seventh, after which they were absorbed into Northumbria and their name lived on mainly through a poem that Wales kept. They were the same people Roman geographers had recorded as the Votadini, a tribe centered on the hill-town of Traprain Law in East Lothian that seems to have gotten on with Rome better than most of its neighbors. The Traprain hoard, a mass of chopped-up Roman silver dug out of the hill in 1919, is often read as subsidy: the empire found it cheaper to pay the tribes beyond Hadrian's Wall than to garrison them. When Roman authority left Britain, the Votadini became Gododdin, a kingdom with its chief stronghold at Din Eidyn, the rock that now carries Edinburgh Castle, and an outlying district called Manaw Gododdin at the head of the Forth around Stirling. From Manaw, Welsh tradition says, a chieftain named Cunedda led his sons south to found Gwynedd, and medieval Welsh kings traced their blood to him.
Their language was Brittonic, the Celtic tongue ancestral to Welsh, Cornish, and Breton, in the northern form that scholars call Cumbric. It was the speech of what later Welsh writers called Yr Hen Ogledd, the Old North, a belt of British kingdoms that included Rheged and Strathclyde, with Gaelic to the west, Pictish to the north, and English arriving from the southeast. By the sixth century they were Christian: the warriors in the poem go to church and do penance before they ride. That poem is Y Gododdin, attributed to the bard Aneirin. Around the year 600 the king Mynyddog Mwynfawr feasted a warband at Din Eidyn for a year on mead, then sent it south to Catraeth, probably Catterick in Yorkshire, where the Angles destroyed it. What survives is not a battle narrative but a run of elegies, one man at a time: who was generous, who was fast, who fed the ravens. One stanza praises a fighter by saying he was no Arthur, which may be the oldest surviving mention of that name.
Din Eidyn fell to the Angles around 638 and Gododdin stopped existing as a polity. Its people stayed put and became Northumbrians, then Lowland Scots. Its legacy went two ways: to Edinburgh and Lothian, whose names are tied to Din Eidyn and the legendary king Lleuddun, and to Wales, which kept the poem as the cornerstone of its literary canon.
