The Deg Hit'an call themselves, plainly, the people from here. The name is a claim on place rather than lineage, and it fits: their country is the lower-middle Yukon and the Innoko, slow brown water and black spruce flats in western interior Alaska, where the river bends past Anvik, Shageluk and Holy Cross. Everyone else called them something worse. Ingalik, the name that sat in books and museum labels for a century, is a Yup'ik word usually glossed as something like louse eggs, and getting it off the maps has been a long piece of work.
They are Athabaskan, Dene, distant relatives by language to the Navajo and Apache of the Southwest, but they live on the seam where the interior meets the coast, and it shows in everything. Christianity arrived village by village and divided them by denomination.
