About Cheraw People
The Cheraw were an Indigenous people of the Carolina and southern Virginia Piedmont. Europeans knew of them from the sixteenth century until the mid-1700s, when war and epidemic disease pushed the survivors into the Catawba Nation. The records call them by several names, including Saura, Sara and Cheraw. Spanish chroniclers wrote of towns called Xuala and Joara, and many historians link those towns to the same people. To colonial writers, the name was what marked them as one people, and it went with them each time they moved across the backcountry.
Joara is the earliest thread. In 1567 the Spanish captain Juan Pardo built Fort San Juan next to this town, near present-day Morganton, North Carolina. It was the first European settlement in the interior of what is now the United States. It lasted about a year and a half before local people destroyed it, along with Pardo's other outposts, and digs at the Berry site have since uncovered its remains. By the late seventeenth century the Saura lived in towns along the Dan River near today's Virginia line. They traded with Virginia merchants and lost people to the diseases that came along the same trading paths. The Sauratown Mountains of Stokes County still carry their name.
Their language is effectively lost. Little or nothing of it was written down. Scholars usually place it in the Siouan family, with the speech of the neighboring Saponi and Tutelo, but the evidence is thin. Outsiders recorded almost nothing of their ceremonial life, and what they believed has to stay an open question.
In the early eighteenth century, Iroquois war parties raiding from the north drove them south to the Pee Dee River in South Carolina, where the town of Cheraw now bears their name. They joined the Yamasee War of 1715, a broad Native uprising against the Carolina colony, and came out of it weaker. Over the next few decades the last Cheraw settled among the Catawba, and colonial records stopped listing them as a separate people.
Their legacy lives on in several communities today. In the 1930s the ethnologist John R. Swanton named the Cheraw and the Keyauwee as the likely ancestors of the Indian people of Robeson County, North Carolina, now known as the Lumbee. Several Pee Dee communities in South Carolina also claim Cheraw descent. For those families the Cheraw are an ancestral people, not a lost one.
