About Basa People

Ruben Um Nyobè, the movement's leader and the most consequential Bassa in modern Cameroonian politics, was hunted down and killed in his own forest in 1958, and the counterinsurgency that followed emptied and regrouped villages. That memory still shapes how Bassa speak about the state. The lighter inheritances travel better: assiko, the guitar and bottle dance music that came out of Bassa country and spread through Cameroon, and bongo tchobi, the near black spiced stew that is the region's calling card at any table in Douala.
