About Yukpa People
The Yukpa are mountain people, and the mountain is specific: the Serranía del Perijá, the long northern spur of the Andes that carries the border between Colombia and Venezuela. They live on its slopes and in its valleys, in Cesar and Norte de Santander on the Colombian side and Zulia on the Venezuelan side, and over the past century they have been pushed steadily higher up them. What sets them apart from every neighbor they have is the language. Yukpa belongs to the Cariban family, which makes them among the westernmost Carib speakers anywhere, a long way from the Guianas and the Amazon where most of their linguistic relatives live. The Barí, in the ranges just to the west, speak a Chibchan language with no relation to Yukpa at all. Spanish colonists never sorted this out. They lumped both peoples together as Motilones, the cropped-haired ones, and separated them only as mansos and bravos, tame and wild. The Yukpa were assigned the first label, which says more about colonial patience than about them.
They farm in plots cut and burned from the forest and then left to rest, and unusually for this part of South America their staple has long been maize rather than manioc. Maize becomes chicha, and chicha anchors any gathering worth attending. Death is handled in two stages: the body is buried, then exhumed later so the bones can be cleaned and carried to a cave or rock shelter, a second funeral that finishes what the first one began. Catholicism arrived in force with the Capuchin mission at El Tukuko in the 1940s, evangelical congregations have grown since, and neither has fully displaced the shamans or the attention paid to dreams. The branches, Irapa, Macoita, Shaparu, Wasama and others, are real distinctions to the Yukpa themselves and mostly invisible to outsiders. Ranchers took the fertile foothills through the twentieth century, and the effort to recover any of it has been the defining Yukpa political story since. In Venezuela that struggle produced Sabino Romero, cacique of Chaktapa, who led land occupations in the Perijá lowlands and was shot dead in March 2013. Economic collapse in Venezuela has since scattered Yukpa families across the border into Colombian towns and cities, where they are conspicuous, unwelcome and improvising.
