About Yuin People

Yuin is the name shared by the Aboriginal clans of the New South Wales South Coast. In their languages the word means a man or a person. Their country runs from Cape Howe on the Victorian border north past Eden, Bega, Narooma and Batemans Bay toward the Shoalhaven River and Jervis Bay. It is squeezed between the Tasman Sea and the forested escarpment of the Great Dividing Range. The Djiringanj, Thaua, Walbanga, Wandandian and neighboring clans each hold their own ground, but kinship, ceremony and a common way of reading the land bind them together. At the center stands Gulaga, the mountain settlers renamed Mount Dromedary. Yuin call her the mother: Najanuka, the small peak at her side, and Barunguba, which is Montague Island out to sea, are her sons. Men's law runs through Biamanga, or Mumbulla Mountain, a place of initiation, and through Daramulun, the sky hero of southeastern ceremony. Alfred Howitt watched a Yuin initiation in the 1880s and put it into print. A century later the elder Guboo Ted Thomas led the fight to stop logging on Mumbulla, and in 2006 both mountains were handed back to Aboriginal owners.

The Yuin languages are Pama-Nyungan: Dhurga across the north and middle of the coast, Djiringanj around Bega and Wallaga Lake, and Thawa on Twofold Bay. They are close relatives of Dharawal, spoken further north. Cedar cutters, squatters and shore whalers arrived in the 1820s and 1830s. From the late nineteenth century many families were moved onto reserves such as Wallaga Lake, Roseby Park and Wreck Bay, where English pushed out the old speech and children were later taken away. On Twofold Bay, Aboriginal men crewed the Davidson family's whaleboats into the twentieth century. They worked beside a pod of killer whales that herded baleen whales into the bay, and local people held those orcas, beowa, to be the spirits of their own dead. Since 2022 the national park south of Eden has carried the name Beowa. Christianity came in with the reserves and is still part of many households, alongside totems people still claim: at Wallaga Lake the black duck, Umbarra, stands for the community. The sea still feeds people, from abalone to rock oysters and fish, and cultural fishing has more than once put Yuin divers at odds with state catch limits. Revival work is bringing Dhurga back into use, and the Wreck Bay community has held title to the land of Booderee National Park since 1995.
