Warnabi Erotic

The Warnabi were a small West Slavic tribe who lived along the upper Warnow river in present-day Mecklenburg, northeastern Germany, from about the ninth to the eleventh century. Their descendants were absorbed first into the Obotrite realm and then into the German-speaking population of medieval Mecklenburg. They were never a major power. They stood apart through their name, their stretch of lake and river country, and their place in the Obotrite confederation, the league of Slavic tribes that held the Baltic lands east of the lower Elbe. Nearly everything known about them comes from outsiders. Adam of Bremen, a cathedral canon writing in the 1070s, is the first to name them, listing them among the Slavic peoples beyond the Saxon frontier. The spelling changes from source to source: Warnavi, Wrani, Wranovi, Warnower. That alone shows how little the clerics writing them down knew or cared about them. The name is tied to the Warnow itself. Some historians have wondered whether it echoes the Varini, a Germanic people named by Tacitus and often placed in the same region, but that link remains a guess. The Warnabi spoke a dialect of the Polabian group, part of the Lechitic branch of West Slavic and a distant cousin of Polish and Kashubian. No text in their speech survives. What remains is on the map: Slavic place names, many ending in -ow or -itz, still scattered across Mecklenburg.

Politically they sat inside the Billung March, the frontier zone that Saxon lords tried to hold for the German kings. In practice that meant tribute, raids and shifting alliances. Like the other Obotrite tribes they worshipped the old Slavic gods. Christianity reached them as a political project, pushed from Saxony and by converted Obotrite princes such as Gottschalk. It did not take hold easily. In the pagan uprising of 1066 Gottschalk was killed, and much of the young church in Obotrite country was torn down. The real break came in the twelfth century. The Wendish Crusade of 1147 and the campaigns of Henry the Lion, in which the Obotrite prince Niklot was killed in 1160, brought the region under Saxon control. Niklot's son Pribislav accepted baptism and became a vassal, and his descendants ruled Mecklenburg until 1918. German settlers followed in large numbers, and over several generations the Slavic population switched to German. The Warnabi legacy today is quiet but real: a river name, village names, and Slavic ancestry beneath the Low German surface of the region.
