In the Mixtón War of 1540 to 1542, the Caxcanes led a revolt and the Tecuexes joined them. The rebels attacked Guadalajara itself. The viceroy, Antonio de Mendoza, then marched in with a large army of Spaniards and Indigenous allies from central Mexico and crushed the uprising. The city was rebuilt in the Atemajac Valley, where it stands today. The defeated peoples were enslaved, resettled or scattered, and the Tecuexes never recovered as a group.
