About Tecuexes People
The Tecuexes were a people of western Mexico who lived in the uplands and river canyons north and northeast of present-day Guadalajara, in Jalisco, when Spanish conquerors arrived around 1530. Within a few generations they had vanished as a distinct group. War, enslavement and epidemic disease wore them down, and the survivors merged into the Indigenous and mestizo population of the region. What set them apart was a territory and a name. They held the country between the Cocas to the south and the Caxcanes to the north, taking in parts of the highlands now called Los Altos de Jalisco and the deep gorge of the Río Grande de Santiago.
Very little is known about their language. No real record of it survives. It is usually assumed to be Uto-Aztecan, possibly close to Caxcan, but there is too little evidence to say where it fits. After the conquest, missionaries and officials across the region worked in Nahuatl, which sped the loss of smaller languages like Tecuexe. Their religion is almost as hard to see. Beyond the fact that Franciscan missionaries replaced it with Catholicism, the sources give few details worth trusting.
Their downfall came fast. Nuño de Guzmán's expedition swept through western Mexico in 1530 and 1531, and it was brutal even by the standards of the conquest. The Spanish soon moved their new city of Guadalajara to Tlacotán, inside Tecuexe territory, where it stood from 1535 until 1541. In the Mixtón War of 1540 to 1542, the Caxcanes led a revolt and the Tecuexes joined them. The rebels attacked Guadalajara itself. The viceroy, Antonio de Mendoza, then marched in with a large army of Spaniards and Indigenous allies from central Mexico and crushed the uprising. The city was rebuilt in the Atemajac Valley, where it stands today. The defeated peoples were enslaved, resettled or scattered, and the Tecuexes never recovered as a group.
A caution for anyone reading about the region: the shaft tombs and the round, stepped ceremonial complexes at Guachimontones, which draw most of the attention to Jalisco's ancient past, belong to cultures many centuries older than the Tecuexes. Linking the two is guesswork. Today the Tecuexes survive mostly as a name in conquest chronicles and local histories, and as one line in the ancestry of the people of central Jalisco.
