About Taz People
The Taz are what happened when the Ussuri taiga became a place where two populations met and stayed. Their descendants did not go back to China, and they did not fold back into the Tungusic villages either. Their language was the clearest marker: a northern Chinese base carrying Nanai and Udege vocabulary for most of what the taiga contained, then, after 1860, a thick layer of Russian. It is now nearly gone. A handful of elderly speakers remain, and the fewer than three hundred people who identify as Taz today speak Russian. Religion layered the same way. Households kept ancestor tablets and marked the lunar calendar, the new year above all, while shamanic practice came down the maternal side and Orthodox baptism arrived with Russian administration. Two dates broke their world. The Treaty of Peking in 1860 handed the region to Russia and set a border between the Taz and the Chinese half of their ancestry. Then in 1937 and 1938 the Soviet state deported the Chinese population of the Far East wholesale, and being counted as Taz rather than Chinese became a question of who stayed. Vladimir Arsenyev, the surveyor who crossed the region on foot before the revolution, left the fullest early account of them, including the debt bondage that traders in the interior held over hunters. Soviet policy moved the Taz repeatedly and in 1972 concentrated most of them in Mikhailovka, in the Olginsky district, where the community still is. Russia added them to its official register of indigenous small-numbered peoples in 2000, which carries subsistence hunting and fishing rights along with the paperwork required to prove you are entitled to them.
