Tacho Erotic

The Tacho are one of the many small hill peoples of the Nuba Mountains in Sudan's South Kordofan state. What sets them apart is mainly their language. In a range where neighboring hills can speak completely unrelated languages, a community is often defined by the speech of its own hills, and Tacho, also written Tocho, is theirs. Outsiders usually group the Tacho under the name Nuba. That label covers dozens of distinct peoples who share a landscape and a political history more than a common origin.

Tocho belongs to the Talodi group of Kordofanian languages, which are spoken in the southern part of the mountains and take their name from the town of Talodi. Its relatives include nearby languages such as Acheron, Lumun and Dagik. Like them, it sorts nouns into classes marked by prefixes. That feature led linguists to place Kordofanian within the Niger-Congo family, though exactly where it fits is still debated. Elsewhere in the same mountains, people speak Kadu languages or Nilo-Saharan languages such as Nyimang and the Hill Nubian group. Sudanese Arabic is the common language for markets, schooling and government, and Tacho who deal with the wider country generally speak it.

Religion in the Nuba Mountains is layered rather than settled. Islam and Christianity both have followers, sometimes within the same extended family. Older local practice, tied to rain, harvest and the authority of ritual specialists, has not disappeared. Observers of the region have often noted that Nuba communities live with this mix more easily than Sudan's national politics would suggest.

History has pressed hard on the southern hills. In the nineteenth century, slave raiding drove many Nuba communities onto rocky high ground for defense, and settlement across much of the range still shows it. Under Anglo-Egyptian rule, the mountains were run as a closed district, cut off from much of the rest of the country. From the 1980s the region was a front in Sudan's civil wars, and the 1990s brought bombing, forced relocation and hunger. The 2005 peace agreement kept South Kordofan inside Sudan. Fighting broke out again in 2011, and Talodi itself came under attack. The war that began in 2023 has isolated much of the region once more. Through all of this, the Tacho have kept their language and their hill communities, which is an achievement in its own right.
