The Bu Dêh have been in steady contact with Khmer and Vietnamese lowlanders for centuries. The Bu Lơ, far less so.
Their language sits in the South Bahnaric branch of Austroasiatic, close kin to Mnong, Chrau, Maa and Koho, and only a very distant relative of the Vietnamese spoken all around it. Most now grow cashew, pepper and rubber, or work someone else's trees. The gong sets and the wine jars survive, kept for weddings, funerals and the new year, and Stieng is still spoken at home in the villages, which in a region this thoroughly rearranged is not a small thing.
