About Sprevane People
The Sprevane were a West Slavic people who lived along the middle Spree, in the country that is now Berlin and its southeastern lake district, from roughly the seventh century until the twelfth, when conquest and German settlement absorbed them. They took their name from the river, and the river is the whole point: their territory was sandy glacial plain broken by water, marsh, oxbow and lake, and their settlements sat on the defensible spots in it. The most important was Köpenick, a ringfort on an island where the Dahme meets the Spree. Downstream at the Havel confluence, near modern Spandau, they bordered the Hevelli, the other river-named Slavic group of the region, and the line between the two seems to have run through that junction.
They left no writing of their own. Their speech belonged to the Lechitic side of West Slavic, within the Polabian group, and it survives only in loanwords and place names, because everything recorded about the Sprevane was recorded by people fighting them. They kept the old Slavic gods. Their resistance to Christianity looks less theological than political: baptism arrived bundled with tribute and foreign lordship, and on those terms it was refused for generations.
The end came in the middle of the twelfth century. Albert the Bear took Brandenburg in 1157 and built a march around it, and the Spree lands went with the rest. One figure surfaces briefly from the Slavic side: Jaxa of Köpenick, a prince who contested Brandenburg with Albert and lost, known partly from chronicle and partly from silver coins struck with the legend IACZA DE COPNIC, which is about as close to a Sprevane voice as the record gets. What followed was replacement rather than massacre. Flemish, Low German and Saxon settlers came east under Ascanian charters, founded villages on a new legal template, and the Slavic-speaking population settled into the bottom stratum of somebody else's country. The language held on in villages for a few more generations, then stopped.
The legacy is a map. Berlin's outer districts still carry Slavic names: Pankow, Rudow, Buckow, Gatow, Treptow, Steglitz, Köpenick itself. The city's own name most likely comes from a Slavic word for dry ground in a swamp, not from the bear on its coat of arms, which is folk etymology working backward from a pun. The nearest living Slavic speech on the same river is proximity rather than descent: upstream in Lusatia, the Sorbs are still there.
