About Sindhi People

Sindhis comprise approximately 14% of the Pakistani population per the 2017 Census — approximately 35+ million Sindhi Mother Tongue speakers in Pakistan, concentrated in Sindh Province (excluding Karachi which is predominantly Urdu-speaking). The Sindhi-language community in Pakistan is the largest national Sindhi-speaking population in the world; the post-1947 Partition Sindhi-Hindu refugees who fled to India form the much smaller Indian Sindhi community (predominantly in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, plus other cities). The Sindhi language is part of the Northwestern Indo-Aryan branch and is written in Pakistan in the Sindhi-Arabic script (a Perso-Arabic adaptation, distinct from the Devanagari/Gurmukhi-style scripts used by Indian Sindhis). Cultural traditions include the Sindhi Sufi-poetry heritage (Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Sachal Sarmast), distinctive Sindhi cuisine, and the substantial Sindhi-language literary tradition.
