About Shahsevan People
The name is a claim rather than a lineage. Shahsevan means "those who love the Shah," a Persian noun bolted onto a Turkic verb, and it announces political loyalty to the Safavid house instead of descent from a common ancestor. The traditional story has Shah Abbas I assembling them in the seventeenth century out of Qizilbash tribes whose chiefs he had stopped trusting. Historians working through the archives place the confederacy later, in the eighteenth century, in the borderland around Ardabil, and read the founding story as something fitted on afterward to explain what already existed. What held these people together was ground and allegiance: a set of tribes, tayfa, each cut into smaller sections, under chiefs who answered to Tehran when it suited them and to nobody when it did not. They speak Azerbaijani, an Oghuz Turkic language shared with the whole northwest of Iran and the republic across the river, and they are Twelver Shia, which is not incidental. The loyalty the name records was loyalty to a Shia dynasty, and the Ashura season and the shrine towns of the region sit inside the ordinary year.
Their country runs between two extremes of one landscape: summer pasture high on the volcanic flanks of Mount Sabalan, winter camp low on the Moghan steppe, flat and hot, reaching north to the Aras. What they carried between the two is what the wider world knows them for. The Shahsevan tent, the alachigh, is a domed frame of bent poles under white felt, nothing like the black goat hair tents of the Qashqai and Bakhtiari further south. Reza Shah's government tried to end nomadism by force in the 1920s and 1930s, and some families went back to the tents only after he abdicated. Later, mechanized state agriculture took much of the Moghan winter range. Most Shahsevan now live in and around Meshgin Shahr, Ardabil and Parsabad, in houses, and a working minority still makes the climb.
