About Setos People
The Setos are the people who ended up on the Orthodox side of a Lutheran country and the Estonian side of a Russian border, and who have built a distinct identity out of belonging fully to neither. The old monastery town of Petseri, which Setos regard as their center, sits on the Russian side as Pechory, and since 1991 the two halves of Setomaa have been in different states. The Seto language is Finnic, a cousin of Estonian and a very close sibling of the Võro spoken just to the west. Tallinn has long filed it as a dialect, and Setos have spent the past two decades arguing that it is a language, with its own orthography, schoolbooks and newspaper to prove it.

Russians nonetheless called them half-believers, because the village feasts on saints' days, the meals eaten on family graves and the offerings to Peko in the barn all carried on underneath the icons. On Seto Kingdom Day each August the community elects a regent to govern in the name of King Peko, who is said to sleep in the monastery caves until he is needed. The festival dates only from 1994 and is now the year's main gathering.
