About Romani European People

Romani people (also called Roma, with Sinti, Kale, Manouche, Romanichal, plus other regional sub-group designations) are a pan-European ethnic group descended from a North Indian source population that migrated to Europe via Iran, Anatolia, and the Balkans approximately the 11th-14th centuries CE — approximately 10-12 million globally, the largest single European ethnic minority. Distributed across most European countries with the largest national populations in Romania (~1.8M+, ~9% of Romanian population per advocacy organization estimates), Bulgaria (~750,000+), Hungary (~700,000+), Slovakia (~500,000+), Spain (~750,000+ Gitanos / Spanish Roma, the largest Western European Roma population), the Czech Republic (~250,000+), Serbia (~150,000+), plus substantial communities in Russia, Ukraine, Greece, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the broader European Union. The Romani languages are part of the Indo-Aryan family — specifically descended from a North Indian Indo-Aryan source population approximately 1,000+ years ago, with the contemporary Romani languages showing substantial loanword borrowing from the various host-country languages over the European-residence period. The community has faced documented persecution including the Romani Genocide (Porajmos) during World War II that killed an estimated 220,000-500,000+ European Roma plus continuing post-war and post-1989 anti-Roma discrimination. Genome-wide studies (Mendizabal et al. 2012) place Romani populations as showing characteristic North Indian source-population ancestry plus substantial admixture from European host populations.

Typical Romani European Phenotypes

Reference for AI generation — hair, eyes, skin, facial structure, build

Phenotype distribution shows characteristic features intermediate between North Indian and European source populations. Skin tone is predominantly Fitzpatrick III-V with IV the modal value — somewhat darker than broader European populations. Hair texture is most often straight to wavy (Andre Walker 1A-2B), predominantly black to very dark brown. Facial features track South Asian / Indo-Aryan source populations: oval face shapes, taller-and-narrower nasal bridges, fuller lips, prominent dark eyebrows. Eye color is predominantly brown to dark brown with substantially lower light-eye frequencies than surrounding European host populations. Build is intermediate.
