About Olcades People
The Olcades were a people of the southern Iberian Meseta who enter the historical record around 221 BC and are gone from it within a generation. They lived in the uplands and river basins of what is now Castilla-La Mancha, roughly the country between the upper Guadiana and the Jucar, in the modern provinces of Cuenca and Albacete. They are known almost entirely because Hannibal Barca chose to open his command by attacking them. He marched inland, stormed their principal town, and carried off enough plunder to keep his army paid through the winter. Polybius names that town Althaea. Livy, working from a different source, calls it Cartala. Neither has been securely located on the ground. That is the Olcades in miniature: a real people who fought a real war, on a map nobody can draw with confidence.
They were hemmed in by better documented neighbors, the Carpetani toward the Tagus in the west, the Oretani to the south, Celtiberian communities in the hills to the north and east. Their personal and place names look Celtic, which puts them among the Celtic or thoroughly Celticized populations of the interior, though the frontier between Celtic and Iberian speech ran straight through their territory and nothing written in their own hand survives to settle the question. Of what they believed, nothing survives at all. What archaeology offers instead is the ordinary shape of Iron Age life on the Meseta: fortified hilltop settlements, sheep and cattle moved seasonally, cereal on the flat ground, ironwork and horse gear good enough to make communities like theirs worth recruiting as mercenaries. The Olcades were worth recruiting, and worth robbing, and it was the second that found them. The following year, survivors of the sack joined the Carpetani in ambushing Hannibal's column at a crossing of the Tagus, and were beaten there too. Rome absorbed the region within a few decades and the name falls out of use. No living population claims descent from them specifically. Whatever they were went into the general Hispano-Roman stock of central Spain, and the word Olcades now belongs mostly to Spanish archaeologists arguing over which hillfort was whose.
