About Padaung People
Ask people in Myanmar or Thailand what a Padaung is and they will describe the brass. Kayan is a Karenic language inside the Tibeto-Burman family, unintelligible to Burmese and Shan speakers but close kin to Kayah and the other Karen tongues. Most Kayan are Roman Catholic, the legacy of Italian missionaries who worked the Karenni hills from the late nineteenth century, with Buddhist, Baptist and animist minorities. Beneath that, the older religion, Kan Khwan, still sets the calendar. Its central rite is Kay Htein Bo each spring, when a village raises a tall decorated pole to honor the creator and reads the year ahead in chicken bones.
The Kayan origin story traces the people to a dragon mother, and one explanation for the coils is that they echo her long neck.
