About Naukan People
The Naukan call themselves Nuvuqaghmiit, the people of Nuvuqaq, and that name is geography before it is anything else. A few hundred people identify as Naukan today, most in the coastal settlements of Chukotka. The harder loss is what the language carried: place names, sea ice vocabulary, and route knowledge attached to a shoreline nobody lives on.
