About Narungga People

The Narungga are the Aboriginal people of Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, the boot-shaped stretch of land that runs south between Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent. With sea on three sides, their country has edges that are easy to see. Their name for the peninsula is Guuranda, and Narungga people still speak of it as country in the full sense: land, shoreline, reefs and islands tied to law, family and obligation. Traditionally the nation was split into four clans, each linked to one part of the peninsula: Kurnara in the north, Windera in the east, Wari in the west and Dilpa in the south. Each clan moved through its own stretch of coast and scrub as the seasons changed, and it worked the shallows as much as the inland plains.

The Narungga language belongs to the Thura-Yura group of the Pama-Nyungan family. It is a close relative of Kaurna, spoken across the gulf on the Adelaide Plains, and of Nukunu to the north. Narungga dropped out of everyday speech during the twentieth century under mission and government pressure. Community members and elders have been rebuilding it from old wordlists and family memory, and it is coming back in place names, welcomes to country and community language programs.

Colonization came early and hard. Sheep runs spread across the peninsula in the 1840s. Around 1860, copper finds at Wallaroo, Moonta and Kadina brought thousands of Cornish miners onto Narungga land within a few years. In the late 1860s a mission was set up at Point Pearce on the peninsula's west coast, and it became the center of Narungga life for generations. It was a place of confinement and control, but it also held families together when much else was lost. Aboriginal people from elsewhere in South Australia were sent there as well, so many Narungga families today also have Kaurna or other Aboriginal ancestry.

Most Narungga are Christian, a legacy of the mission years, but the old stories were never wiped out. Accounts of the ancestral figure Buthera, whose travels explain landmarks around the peninsula, are still told. Point Pearce remains an Aboriginal community, and Narungga families also live in towns across the peninsula and in Adelaide. In recent decades the Narungga have pursued land and heritage claims through the courts and won recognition of native title over parts of Guuranda. That ruling formally acknowledged a connection the people themselves never doubted.
