Misak accounts of beginning start in water. The lakes of the páramo sent the first people down the streams, and the community calls itself the children of the water. This is not decoration. It sets the terms for how they treat the high moorland, which feeds the rivers of much of the department and which they guard accordingly. Catholicism sits on top of the older cosmology rather than in place of it, with an evangelical minority alongside.
