About Xipaya People
The Xipaya are river people of the middle Xingu basin in Brazil's Pará state. Two rivers define them: the Iriri and the Curuá, both tributaries that run through dense forest south of the town of Altamira. For generations the Xipaya traveled these rivers by canoe, working the rapids and the fishing grounds, and their villages still sit on the banks. Their language belongs to the Juruna branch of the Tupian family. It is a small branch, and its only other living member is Yudja, spoken by the Juruna people of the Xingu. Only a few elders still speak Xipaya, and daily life happens in Portuguese. Linguists have worked with the last speakers to record the grammar and vocabulary while they still can.
Rubber changed everything. From the late nineteenth century, tappers and traders pushed up the Xingu tributaries and pulled Xipaya men and women into debt labor on rubber estates. Villages broke apart. Disease and Kayapó raids cut the population down, and many Xipaya married into the settler families along the rivers or into the neighboring Kuruaya, another Tupian people who are still closely tied to them by marriage and shared land. For much of the twentieth century, outsiders lumped these families together with the region's mixed-ancestry river dwellers and paid little attention to who was Indigenous.
In recent decades the Xipaya have organized around a renewed Indigenous identity. They secured a demarcated territory on the Iriri, and Xipaya families also live in the Kuruaya territory on the Curuá. The Belo Monte hydroelectric dam, built on the Xingu near Altamira, reshaped the region. It drew Indigenous families in the city, Xipaya among them, into years of negotiation over resettlement and compensation.
Much of what is known about older Xipaya religion comes from Curt Nimuendajú, the German-born ethnographer who spent time with them in the early twentieth century. He recorded a world of shamans and spirits and a culture hero named Kumaphari. Most Xipaya today are Christian, but the old stories matter to a people working to rebuild what the rubber era scattered.
