About Selk'nam People
The Selk'nam, also called the Ona, were a hunter-gatherer people of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America, in territory now divided between Argentina and Chile. Bands were organized around territory and kinship rather than formal chiefs, and shamans (xon) held ritual authority. Their most celebrated institution was the Hain, a long male initiation ceremony in which elders impersonated spirits to instruct and test young men. The rite was documented in the early twentieth century by the missionary-ethnographer Martin Gusinde, whose photographs remain the primary visual record of the culture.
